Tony Veney
HEAD COACH CROSS COUNTRY / TRACK & FIELD, ANTELOPE VALLEY COLLEGE (CA)
Marauder Athletics has hired Anthony Veney as the new Men’s and Women’s Track & Field head coach. Coach Veney brings over 40 years of extensive track and field coaching and teaching experience from all competition levels and is a nationally certified instructor and lecturer.
Prior to joining Antelope Valley College Athletics, Veney left Ventura College Athletics after 10 seasons to coach members of the Chinese national team 400 meter sprinters, winning 1 silver in the men’s 400m, 1 gold in the mixed 4x400m relay, and gold medals in the men and women’s 4x400m relays. He returned home due to Covid-19 and is now the head track and cross country coach for Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, California.
“Coach Veney brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our Track & Field program, and we’re excited about the direction we’re headed in under his leadership,” said AVC Athletic Director Tom Gang.
Veney has successful coaching experience from high school, NCAA Division 1, 2, and 3, national, and international competition.
He has coached both track and cross country at UCLA, University of Oregon, and Portland State throughout his career. During his tenure at the Division 1 level, Coach Veney helped lead the Oregon Ducks men’s outdoor track and field team to a no. 9 national ranking, coaching 25 All-Conference and All-Americans, including five conference champions at Portland State, and 15 indoor/outdoor All-Americans at UCLA. Most notably, the 2009 Pac-10 4×100 meter relay championship team.
Anthony is a 1976 graduate of UCLA with a degree in History. He was the former 800-meter record holder for the Bruins and was a member of two NCAA outdoor track and field championship teams. He received his Master’s Degree in physical education from Azusa Pacific University.
Coach Veney is a USATF Level I-II-III instructor with a Master of Coaching certificate and was awarded the Fred Wilt Coach/Educator of the Year Award by USA Track & Field in 2017. He is a regular speaker at national track and field clinics and has produced and published several videos and books related to the specialized areas of sprints and hurdles.
